Entertainment Weekly names Edward Cullen among the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years

HollywoodNews.com: It must be the new rage—popular magazines supplementing talk of real people with discussion of fictional characters. Entertainment Weekly is the most recent publication to rank one of Stephenie Meyer’s brood, having named Edward Cullen as one of the 100 Greatest Characters of the Last 20 Years as part of this week’s cover feature.

“Who says vampires are scary?” the section headline reads, “Sometimes they’re just dreamy teen idols.” All this after it announces that Stephenie Meyer’s most beloved vamp ranked in at #53. Though the write-up isn’t shy about suggesting that Robert Pattinson the actor may be responsible for the memorability of Edward Cullen the vampire, both Twi-hards and Twi-haters would agree that certain aspects of his character (e.g., being brooding and mysterious, gentlemanly but unattainable, unfailingly devoted to Bella) hold the most appeal to women.

Said Pattinson of Edward Cullen “If you played it straight-out manic-depressive, every young girl watching it would have been like, “Um, I don’t know about that.’ So I tried to make it as much as possible like a 17-year-old guy who had this purgatory inflicted upon him.” One thing’s for certain—however Rob decided to approach the role, he got it right.

The Entertainment Weekly ranking comes in the wake of a recent Forbes Magazine feature naming Carlisle Cullen the wealthiest fictional character in the world. What could be next for Meyer’s characters? A Vogue feature naming Rosalie Hale the most beautiful?

Kristen Stewart Says Something Stupid, Smh.

Twilight star Kristen Stewart hates being pursued by paparazzi so much that she has
compared the experience to being “raped”.

The 20-year-old actress, who plays Bella Swan in the vampire franchise, said that being photographed and falsely reported by paparazzi makes her feel like someone being raped, reported Aceshowbiz online.

“It’s so… The photos are so.. I feel like I’m looking at someone being raped. A lot of the time I can’t
handle it. I never expected that this would be my life,” said Stewart.

“What you don’t see are the cameras shoved in my face and the bizarre intrusive questions being asked, or the people falling over themselves, screaming and taunting to get a reaction. All you see is an actor or a celebrity lit up but a flash,” she added.

The actress, who is rumoured to be dating her co-star Robert Pattinson, hates being judged by the things people say about her.

“Your little persona is made up of all the places that people have seen you and what has been said about you. And usually the places that I am are so overwhelming in the moment and fleeting for me – like one second where I’ve said something stupid, that’s me, forever,” said Stewart.

Who Are the Top Contenders for Spider-Man?

2010.05.27
Who Are the Top Contenders for Spider-Man? Photo 1

Even as Alvin Sargent rewrites the script for Columbia’s rebooted “Spider-Man,” director Marc Webb has been ensnaring actors in his web(b) in his search for the new Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.

Webb has been meeting and reading actors quietly for several months, but the list has narrowed in the past week or two. No screen tests have been conducted at this early stage (though it will be a requirement), and insiders point out that the director and studio are still on the lookout.

The candidates for the web-slinger include:

– Jamie Bell:

The 24-year-old English actor, repped by WME and Artists Independent Management, who made his film debut playing the title character in “Billy Elliot,” has been doing the proper British actor thing in period movies such as “Nicholas Nickleby” and “Jane Eyre” (he’s also appeared in Hollywood movies such as Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” and Ed Zwick’s “Defiance”). More important, he’s already stepped into the comics world by portraying Tintin in Jackson and Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” movie, which won’t hit screens until December 2011.

– Alden Ehrenreich:

The Los Angeles-born 20-year-old has a juicy backstory, having been “discovered” by Spielberg, who saw a comedy video starring Ehrenreich at a bat mitzvah of his daughter’s friend. A couple of TV appearances followed, but the actor’s next big leap came when he was cast by Francis Ford Coppola in 2009’s “Tetro.” He is repped by WME.

– Frank Dillane:

The 19-year-old Brit’s main credit is last year’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” where he played a young Tom Riddle. Is a minor role in a “Potter” film a good springboard for a mega-franchise? It worked for Robert Pattinson.

– Andrew Garfield:

The L.A.-born actor had a short stint on a BBC TV series called “Sugar Rush” but gained notices for playing a young reporter in a gritty British TV movie trilogy titled “Red Riding.” The 27-year-old appeared in “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” and will be seen in David Fincher’s movie about Facebook, “The Social Network.” He is repped by CAA and the Collective.

– Josh Hutcherson:

The youngest actor of the bunch — he turns 18 this year — is also the one with the most experience. The past six years alone have seen the Kentucky-born kid rack up credits with key roles in Jon Favreau’s “Zathura,” drama “Bridge to Terabithia” and the upcoming “Red Dawn” remake. He appears in the Sundance hit “The Kids Are All Right,” which insider buzz suggests could be an Oscar contender, and starred with Brendan Fraser in “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”

Hutcherson, repped by ICM and Beddingfield, just signed on to star in the “Journey” sequel, and that movie could prove a fly in the ointment if the actor’s schedule collides with “Spider-Man.” (Though you can bet every effort would be made to make it work.)

The group of actors seems to fall in line with what Webb has been looking to do with his take on Spider-Man, which is to cast relative unknowns in a story that roots Parker back in high school. The movie will be an angst-ridden tale of a teen dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though he had the power to stop it.

Columbia wants to begin production by year’s end, but Webb and the studio are taking their time choosing the actor while Sargent gets the script in spider-shape.

A Columbia spokesperson did not comment on the casting process, saying “There have been a number of names floated online and almost every week, someone calls with a new rumor. We are not commenting on the casting process or rumors such as these.”

Tyra Banks is insane, water is wet

(this is an actual still from an actual episode)

In five years on the air, Tyra Banks has gone undercover as a homeless person, an obese woman and even a man. Plus, she’s interviewed everyone from Beyoncé to Janet Jackson and Miley Cyrus. But nothing thrilled the host of The Tyra Banks Show like her interview with one particular U.S. senator.

“I was so nervous, sick to my stomach and my hands were shaking,” Banks tells PEOPLE of her interview with then-Senator Barack Obama. “I asked him to look into the crystal ball and said, ‘What do you see in your future, Senator?’ And without hesitation he replied, ‘The White House.’ That clip ran on CNN and every national morning show. I’ll never forget being a part of political history.”

She found a place in pop culture history, too.

“I even got bitten on the neck by Twilight’s sexiest vampire, Robert Pattinson,” says Banks, whose talk show will air its final episode Friday. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt so envied.”

But the supermodel-turned-mogul, 36, is hardly slowing down with the end of the talk show. With her company, Bankable Enterprises, Banks plans to branch out into film production. She also plans to publish a series of novels, and cycle 15 of her reality staple America’s Next Top Model will feature a new partnership with Italian Vogue.

Looking back on her talk show, Banks says it was, “always about my life’s mission of expanding the definition of beauty. I wanted everyone to understand that life is about accepting and loving yourself, flaws and all.”

Mission accomplished.

“A woman told me she saw the ‘Kiss My Fat Ass’ episode and put down the pills she was going to use to commit suicide,” says Banks.

Of course, she appreciates the lighter moments, too.

Jokes Banks: “Hell, I even love the women who come up and say, ‘You rockin’ your real hair or a weave today, girl?’ “

His role as cold-skinned, warm-hearted vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight movie saga has propelled this young British actor to idol status almost overnight. But – perhaps taking a cue from his character, who loves humanity despite himself – Mr. Pattinson hasn’t let his grueling production schedule or his mega-fame keep him from contributing regularly to causes he cares about. We’re grateful that Rob made time to design this one-of-a-kind, original sketch for PACT’s auction benefiting missing children, and we know you’re grateful, too … where else are you, RPattz fanatic, going to buy what may just be an original self portrait penned by Rob himself that will go to aid such a great cause? Twilight Saga, Robert Pattinson Take Home National Movie Awards

It’s safe to say the National Movie Awards, which took place in London last night, are not the Oscars.

Need proof? New Moon took home the Best Fantasy Movie, while Eclipse actually garnered a victory despite the fact that it won’t be released for a month. It won Most Anticipated Movie.

Star Robert Pattinson was also honored, receiving the trophy for Best Male Performance. Unable to attend, due to work on Water for Elephants, he recorded the following message for fans:

Thanking Fans

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise ended the show by winning the Screen Icon award.

Gwyneth Paltrow presented it to him and said: “For over two decades he has shown a bold eagerness to take risks, engaging and enthralling audiences.”

He’s also jumped on a lot of couches and may have inducted Katie Holmes into a cult. But, hey, how cool was the actor in Jerry Maguire?!?

Below, we’ve posted a number of photos from the event, highlighted by TomKat looking its cutest/creepiest:
